Bingo can be traced back to 1530 in Italy to an Italian lottery called “Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia.” This game is still played in Italy every Saturday. The Germans also played a version of this game but it was used to help children with math, history, and spelling.
In the U.S.A. bingo was originally called ‘Beano”! The game reached the USA in 1929. The game used to be played at country fairs where a dealer would select numbered disks from a cigar box. Players would mark their cards with beans and yell “Beano” when they won. A New York toy salesman named Edwin Lowe renamed it to “Bingo” when he overheard someone shouting “bongo” instead of “beano”. Edwin then hired a math professor from the Columbia University named Carl Leffler to assist him to increase the number combinations of Bingo. Bingo has mainly played in churches as a means of raising church funds.
